When to Tremolo Quarter Notes
In movements where the rhythmic or martial element is less prominent and especially when the movement is too slow to make single strokes effective, quarter notes and even those of shorter duration, are played with the tremolo. This produces a more smooth and flowing- effect than would the single strokes and permits the phrasing" to be more carefully indicated. The term LEGATO is used to indicate a close binding together of the consecutive tones of a composition, each tone sounding until its vibra- tions are stopped by the next tone. This manner of playing is indicated by the slur (also used to in - dicate the phrasing), and, when the rate of speed or the character of the composition will allow it,the tre - molo is used, but the use of the slur does not necessarily indicate the tremolo, since it is perfectly possi- |
